Time Attendance for Construction Sites and Labour Camps in the UAE: How to Choose

How to choose a time attendance system for construction sites and labour camps in the UAE: device options, site conditions, power, shifts and payroll.

What is the right time attendance system for a construction site or labour camp? Choose the method that survives your site conditions first, then think about features. In dusty, wet or hot sites, face recognition or card terminals with a backup method usually cope better than fingerprint alone, because worn fingertips and dirt affect fingerprint reading. For large crews, add enough terminals to avoid queues at shift change, and connect the devices to attendance software so supervisors do not collect punches by hand.

This guide explains what is different about attendance on construction sites and labour camps, how the device options compare, and what to settle before you buy.

Why Construction Sites and Labour Camps Are Harder Than Offices

An office has a clean entrance, steady power and a network cable nearby. A site often has none of these. Before you pick a device, list the conditions it will face:

  • Dust, cement, oil and moisture on hands and on the terminal itself.
  • Gloves, helmets and safety gear that change how people approach a terminal.
  • Shift change rushes, when a whole crew arrives or leaves within minutes.
  • Temporary power and network, especially in the early phases of a project.
  • Several sites or gates, with records that need to end up in one place.
  • Subcontractors and short-term labour who join and leave during the project.
  • Heat and direct sun on outdoor mounting positions.

Planning matches the device to these conditions. A model that works well in a reception area may not suit a site gate, so we check the actual location before recommending one.

Capabilities vary by terminal model, so treat the table as a general guide. We supply and configure ZKTeco and Hikvision attendance devices and confirm the supported methods for the exact model in your quotation.

Which Method Suits Which Part of the Site?

Most projects end up using more than one method, placed where each suits.

Main site gate or camp entrance. This is where crews arrive together, so speed and identity both matter. Face recognition avoids the need to touch a sensor and does not depend on fingertip condition. It needs a sensible mounting height and protection from direct glare. See our face recognition attendance systems for the packages we install.

Site office, store and camp administration. Staff here work in cleaner conditions, so fingerprint attendance machines are a practical and affordable choice.

Temporary labour and visitors. A card or tag is quick to issue and cancel, but it only proves that a card was tapped, not who held it. For the full trade-offs, read our comparison of biometric vs RFID vs face recognition attendance.

Fallback method. Many terminals can combine methods, such as face or fingerprint with card or PIN, so a worker whose finger is not read is not locked out. Confirm the combinations for the model you are quoted.

Power, Network and Mounting: The Practical Checklist

Most site attendance problems come from the installation, not the device. Settle these points before ordering:

  1. Power supply. Is there stable power at the mounting point, or will it be moved as the project advances?
  2. Network connection. Will the terminal connect by cable, Wi-Fi or another route, and who maintains it?
  3. Mounting position. Protected from direct sun and rain, at a height that suits workers, and away from strong backlight.
  4. Enclosure and protection. Dusty or wet locations may need a suitable housing. Check the datasheet for the model you are quoted rather than assuming.
  5. Queue management. Shift change is the peak. Estimate how many people arrive in a short window and plan the number of terminals around that.
  6. Relocation. If the terminal will move when the site layout changes, plan for cabling and re-configuration.

We can survey the site before recommending a device. Where a mobile option may suit staff moving between locations, we discuss it during the survey, subject to your requirements.

Enrolment, Shifts and Subcontractors

A site system needs rules, not only hardware.

Enrolment. Enrol workers before the first shift, and enrol more than one finger per person if you use fingerprint. Plan a process for workers who join mid-project and for those who leave.

Shifts and overtime. Day, night and rotating shifts need to be configured in the attendance software so late arrivals, early exits and overtime are calculated the way your policy states. Check your policy and labour rules with MOHRE or your legal adviser.

Subcontractors. Decide whether subcontractor workers are enrolled on your system, a separate group, or the contractor's own. This avoids disputes when invoices are compared with the attendance record.

Multiple sites. Agree early how records from different gates or sites will be combined into one report.

From Punches to Payroll

A terminal only records punches. The value comes from turning those punches into timesheets, overtime and payroll inputs without retyping. Connect the devices to attendance software such as HRX360 for shifts, leave and payroll, and read our guide to attendance machine payroll integration to see how export, scheduled sync and direct links differ.

Attendance records are also personal data, and fingerprints and faces are biometric data. Tell workers what is collected, limit who can see it and set a retention rule. Check current UAE data protection and MOHRE requirements with your legal adviser.

Controlling Who Enters the Site

Attendance tells you who worked. Access control decides who can enter. Many sites combine both at the gate so that only enrolled workers get through. If you need turnstiles at a gate or building entrance, read our guide to tripod, waist-height and speed gate turnstiles and see our turnstile access control page. For doors to site offices, stores or camp buildings, see our door access control systems. The pillar page on time attendance systems in Dubai explains how the whole setup fits together.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you track attendance on a construction site?

The answer depends on site conditions, crew size and connectivity. Face recognition or card terminals with a backup method often suit dusty entrances, while fingerprint suits cleaner areas such as site offices. A site survey is the reliable way to decide.

Does fingerprint attendance work on construction sites?

It can in cleaner locations, but dust, cement, moisture and worn fingertips affect readability. For harsh conditions we compare face recognition, card options or a combined method before recommending a model.

Can workers share or lend cards on an RFID system?

Yes, a card can be lent to a colleague, because the terminal reads the card and not the person. If proxy punching is a concern, choose a biometric method or combine a card with a biometric check.

How many attendance terminals does a labour camp need?

It depends on how many people arrive at the same time and how the entrances are laid out. We plan the number of terminals around your peak shift-change window so queues stay manageable.

Can attendance from several sites go into one report?

Yes, with devices connected to the same attendance software. The set-up depends on your network and sites, and we confirm it during the survey.

Do I need power and internet at every terminal?

A fixed terminal needs power, and usually a network connection to send punches to the software. We check what is available at each mounting point and advise on options before installation.

How much does a site attendance system cost?

Our fingerprint attendance package starts from AED 999 + VAT, including a ZKTeco terminal, installation and configuration, basic software setup, enrolment and training. Face recognition packages start from AED 2,000 + VAT, and installation only from AED 400. Site requirements can change the final quotation.

Are biometric attendance systems allowed for workers in the UAE?

Rules on collecting and storing biometric data and on attendance records can change and depend on your situation. Check with MOHRE or your legal adviser, and tell workers what is collected and why.
